POWER RELATION ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF DAWSON’S CREEK “DIRTY DANCING”

                                                                 CHAPTER I
                                                            INTRODUCTION

1.1  The Background of the Study
Language use is a unique phenomenon. It is because language use in fact heavily depends on context of situation (Halliday,1985:9). It seems that language and situation are inseparable. There is no deterministic relationship, of course, except in highly ritualized situations. In certain games, ceremonies, and formal rituals, actual forms of words may be laid down  as part of the proceedings, but most everyday uses of language are much more flexible. Given a social situation such as a “traditional market” it is possible to predict a great deal about the content, functions, and style of language used there. Much of the language will be transactional,
concerned with buying and  selling. It is different from using language in mosques or churches in a kind of religious services as sermons and the likes. Face to face conversation in which participants involved may see
gestures of their counterparts, is different from a mediated conversation in which participants involved cannot see gestures and what the speakers are doing while conversing.
About context of situation, Halliday and Hasan (1985), clarify it and suggest that context of situation can be specified through the use of register variables. They fall under the heading of field, mode, and tenor. Field refers to what is going on, including activity focus which is the nature of social activity and object focus or subject matter. So, field specifies what is going on with reference????????????????????
