CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This  chapter  presents  background  of  the  research,  research  problem,  research objective,  research  hypothesis,  significance  of  the  research,  scope  and  limitation  of the research, and definition of key terms.

A. Background of the Research

Hordvanced  (1995:662)  said  that  language  is  the  most  important means  of  communication.  It  has  many  roles  such  as  to  communicate  with  the others,  to  make  a  relationship,  to  give information,  to  express  our  felling,  etc. language  is  the  key  of  communication,  so  by  using  language  will  help  us  to make easy our life.

Ideally,  country  has  its  own  language,  even  it  has  more  than  one language,  everyone  wants  to  communicate  with  all  peoples  in  the  world.  But, they may face some difficulties, one of them is different language. To solve the problem,  it  is  necessary  to  make  international  language  such  as  English, Mandarin, Arabic, and etc.

English  is  one  of  an  interactional  language  which  has  an  important role in the world. In some countries the power language is the official language which  is  used  for  government  education  commerce  and  international communication.  In  Indonesia English is a foreign language that is taught from elementary  school  to  university.  English  is  a  foreign  language  used  a  medium?????????????

INTRODUCTION

            This chapter consists of background of the study, statement of problem, objective of the study, the significance, hypothesis, definition of the key term. Each section is presented as follows:

A.    Background of the study

English is an important language to learn because it is one of the international languages. The people of different background use English to communicate with other. In the eras of globalization, the function of English language becomes more important especially in the economic sector. Many inventors come to Indonesia. They speak English for communication.

Now, English is very important lesson in junior high school. Because in the academic 2012/ 2013, the school in Indonesia are expected to apply the Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP). In the KTSP, the school has its authority and responsibility for determining the subject matter and goal of every education unit. 

In Junior High School, the English teaching is aimed to reach functional level (Depdiknas, 2006:227). It means that the students are demanded to be able to use English to fulfill their daily needs such as reading newspaper, communicating with other people both in oral and written. In accordance to achieve that demand, the teaching English in Junior High School focused to the????????????

In  this  chapter  the  researcher  serves  seven  topics  related  to  the  study. These topics are cover background of the study, research problem, objective of the research, research hypothesis, significance of the study, and definition of the key terms.

A.  Background of the Study

Language  plays  the  important  role  in  education.  By  using  language  the process of education runs smoothly. In educational institutions, many people learn languages  mainly  English  language  because  it  is  very  useful  language  to communicate  with  other  nations.  As  we  know  that  English  is  a  foreign  language that  is  taught  in  Indonesia  from  Kindergarten  School  to  University  as  second language. That is why as a country which is use English as a second language, it’s deeply important to learn as early as possible.

As  second  language  learning,  understanding  a  language  is  not  simple, especially when people have to learn it. That is why the process of acquiring that English  language  skill  normally  takes  a  lot  of  time.  Most  students  as  second language learners, want to be able to understand what people are saying to them in

English,  either  face-to-face,  on  TV  or  on  radio,  and  soon.  In  fact,  it  is  very difficult to them. The difficulty is caused by many factors varying from difference of  sounds  between  the  second  language  learners’  first  language  and  the  second>?????
